Census documents dramatic growth in Sherman and Denison

GRAYSON COUNTY, Texas (KTEN) — The 2020 census shows major growth in both Denison and Sherman.

Sherman's population increased a little more than 13 percent; Denison's population swelled almost 8 percent.

Both cities are seeing people moving from the Dallas-Fort Worth area to Grayson County, whether retired or starting a family.

"If you do a deep dive into the numbers, you'll see that our growth is recently taking off due to our planned developments and folks moving in here in the last two, three, four years," said Sherman Mayor David Plyler.

"As far as the demographics that are growing, even the race and ethnicities in Denison that are growing, it's every category," added City of Denison spokesperson Aaron Werner. "We are seeing a more diverse community here in Denison."

Werner adds that the 2020 Census failed to capture the growth spurt that happened in Denison after the data collection window closed.

New housing developments and companies moving to Grayson County account for much of the growth.
